Some Portraits
Some recent portraits. Getting the right proportions in people’s faces is so difficult. Some mixed results.
Cars
I’ve had a long standing fascination with Industrial Design and lately with shiny surfaced objects. I’m certainly no industrial designer, but it would be nice to get a handle on making things believable and technical looking. Here’s a recent bunch of car drawings where I’m trying to get some of the reflections.
Academy of Sciences Aquarium this weekend
I went into the city and did some sketching at the Academy of Science, and there I did some studies of the aquarium cases. The lighting was fabulous, lit from above, weird little caves and fish at all angles, like spaceships floating around in the ether.
Also went to an open figure drawing workshop at the Mission Cultural Center. My current figure drawing system: start with gesture lines, then create volumes, then put on musculature and contours, while intermittently trying to focus on physical force areas in the contrast between straight and curved shapes. Then I work on volumes with Conti chalk and then put a feathered shadow right next to it. This immediate flip between light and shadow seems to make my forms more dynamic because then on the shadow side it can become light again.
